Lombok Hotel Association (LHA) Converged on WTM LONDON 2012

Launched in the 1980s, WTM or World Travel Market is one of the leading global events for the travel industry. Staged annually in London, the event offers a unique opportunity for the whole global travel trade to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business. WTM is owned by the world’s leading events organizer Reed Exhibitions (RE). They organize a portfolio of other travel industry events including Arabian Travel Market and International Luxury Travel Market.

Over the years, WTM has lived up to its expectations by showcasing the best in travel, tourism and hospitality. Today, the event itself attracts thousands of visitors and suppliers of travel and tourism products/services.

This year, WTM was held on 5-8 of November. Lombok Hotels Association (LHA) considered the event a great opportunity to further promote the Lombok travel, tourism and hospitality industry. They wound of sending 7 of their Lombok hoteliers to actively participate in this tourism exhibition.
Their forethought and considerations were not off mark despite the economic recession that is beating down hard on some European countries. Over 187 countries still found their way to London to participate. Furthermore, on the first day of WTM 2012 alone, it experienced a resounding success, with exhibitor invitation visitors up 5% compared to last year’s event.

During the official opening of the WTM ceremony, the chairman of WTM Fiona Jeffery stressed, “Travel and tourism has come far with the creation of jobs, economic boosts, leisure and relaxation. Travel and tourism will remain big given the fact that it has contributed to the world GDP and has created 98 million jobs worldwide.” She further appealed to governments worldwide to give the industry the recognition it deserves as it helps to turn lives around and promote economic prosperity.

Moreover, The findings from the WTM Global trends report 2012 revealed that Asia’s tourism is driving fast and furious; tourism spending continues to grow in Asia as regional economies remain vibrant. Meanwhile The World Travel Market 2012 Industry Report highlighted the SLIMMA nations (Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico and Argentina) are again highlighted by the industry as the emerging travel and tourism powerhouses coming up behind the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
Indonesia’s importance is further remarked upon and cited because of its diversity, growing population, and high disposable income.

However, let’s not forget that there is still huge untapped potential for growth in travel and tourism in Indonesia. The Indonesian government should put the appeal and information into their considerations because it is believed by many that the government needs to implement more measures to boost the industry and to help the tourism sector achieve its potential. With continued support and better regulation from the government, promising growth is expected over the forecast period – 2016.

All in all, almost 46,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press, embarked on ExCeL – London last November to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinions and trends at WTM. The chairman of LHA Stephane Servin stated, “The results were promising. We sincerely hope that presenting Lombok at WTM will ensure awareness of the Lombok tourism product, as well as place Lombok firmly on the world tourism map.” He further explained, ”We would love people to know more about Lombok and what Lombok truly is. It is not ‘an unspoiled Bali,’ or ‘the new Bali’. Neither is it ‘Bali’s sister island.’ Yes, our proximity to Bali has been a blessing but it is also a curse. We have been living in Bali’s shadow far too long. It’s time that we make an aggressive tourism campaign and take action to show the world what the region has to offer and more. Our main message is clear: Lombok is not Bali at all, and that is precisely its charm.”

ASEAN INTER-PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY (AIPA) 33rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY – AT THE SANTOSA LOMBOK 16-22 SEPTEMBER 2012

Strengthening the Parliamentary Roles towards ASEAN community 2012

Senggigi, Lombok, September 26 2012: The 33rd general assembly of AIPA was held from September 16-22 in Lombok, Indonesia. The Santosa was chosen as the main venue for most of the event’s major programs and also the event’s social functions such as the welcome and farewell dinners. The assembly was chaired by the President of AIPA and the Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, H. E. Dr. Marzuki Alie. Participants of the 33rd General Assembly consisted of members of the ASEAN parliamentary delegations from 10 countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) and also observer groups. These observer groups included high level parliamentary delegations from nine observer countries (Australia, Belarus, Canada, the People’s Republic of China, European Parliament, India, republic of Korea, Japan and the Russian Federation).

An important event that convenes once a year, the AIPA General Assembly is held to provide policy directions for the development of AIPA’s objectives. It fills the need for a major forum of interchange among its’ members by attracting a large international audience, covering a wide range of important topics, and facilitating communication, networking and coordination among the ASEAN members. H.E. Dr. Marzuki Alie opened the meeting and warmly welcomed the delegates to Lombok, Indonesia. He went on to state to the conference during his opening speech, “AIPA has contributed greatly to ASEAN’s connection, integration and development thus enhancing the bloc’s central role in the region. AIPA 33 will discuss the organization’s performance, challenges and opportunities in ensuring peace, stability, security and prosperity in the region”.

H.E. Dr. Boediono, Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia also personally inaugurated the 33rd AIPA Assembly, and extended his warm greetings and appreciation to all parliamentarians of ASEAN during a Formal Dinner held in the Hall of the Governor’s Office in Mataram on September 17.

The AIPA Executive Committee (EXCOM) Meeting along with the First Plenary Session and the UN Women’s Luncheon were held on September 18, and were followed the next day by committee meetings, dialogue with observer delegations and a meeting of the Committee on Joint Communiqué. The committee meetings adopted many important resolutions that focus on some specific strategies and developments. AIPA’s second plenary session was convened in the same ASEAN spirit of friendship, unity and cooperation on September 21. Similar to the first session, it adopted many important decisions, marking a new development of AIPA’s role in the ASEAN Community. Up for discussion were measures to boost coordination in strategic research and technological transfers in agriculture, food and forestry; energy and environmental related issues; adapting to climate change and improving parliamentary cooperation between AIPA members and its observers. During this second plenary session, the participants also decided that the 34th AIPA General Assembly would be held in Brunei from September 15-21, 2013.

Finally, the AIPA Solidarity Farewell Party held on September 21, 2012 marked the end of the successful 33rd General Assembly. H.E. Dr Marzuki Alie once again expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all AIPA Delegations, Observer Parliaments, Representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat, and the rest of the invitees for their enthusiasm, support and strong cooperation during the 33rd AIPA General Assembly. He further reminded all delegations, “We value the resolutions produced by the Committee for political matters, economic matters, social matters and WAIPA. Each resolution that we adopt reflects our concern in addressing all problems in the region. In order to overcome future challenges, in line with the dynamics and interaction in the region, we need to improve the quality and quantity of our communication based on the principles of equality and togetherness.” The party’s entertainment, which included traditional dances and music performances from the ten ASEAN countries, was beautifully presented and well received.

During the function, H.E. Dr. Marzuki Alie presented an AIPA Appreciation Trophy to The Santosa Villas & Resort and further expressed his gratitude for The Santosa’s extraordinary job and excellent service, and also for it’s management and staff’s tremendous support, continuous efforts and help to make the event a success.

Achievements, Opportunities & Challenges of Lombok Tourism

Senggigi, Lombok, June 29 2012: LHA chairman Stephane Servin, general manager of The Santosa at Senggigi, has called for more serious support from local authorities for controlled development of Lombok tourism before potential community benefits are lost.

Recently back from the industry-acclaimed 25th Korean World Travel Fair (KOFTA), Servin outlined LHA efforts to promote tourism, aired his frustration at impediments to appropriate government action and shared his expectations and fears for the industry’s future.

Healthy, controlled tourism development was crucial to the region as it would create direct employment for Lombok’s growing population and generate spin-off jobs in industries such as transport, construction, distribution and retail, he said.

“It also is a chance for a culture and population to be recognized and appreciated internationally and can be an instrument for promoting handicrafts, arts and cultural heritage. Good tourism can be our best ambassador.

“Properly managed and marketed tourism will generate community income, identity and pride as well as regional revenue to maintain cultural heritage at sites and events.

“Unfortunately Lombok is failing to realise its true potential, and advantages for everyone are being lost when tourism clearly is the best and easiest path to progress and economic improvement for Lombok.”

Servin outlined major issues in other industries, which gave tourism its lead. Gold and copper mining, while potentially revenue rich, was associated with major environmental concerns; agriculture was hamstrung by limited land and poor quality product; fish and prawn farming could not meet high rates of local tax; and industrial sea farming projects were impeded by regulation.

“No sector has the potential to create as much direct employment and generate supporting businesses as tourism.”

Servin said local government continued to allocate insufficient funds to produce adequate and appropriate tourism promotional material. “It appears tourism is not given priority status in budget allocations.

“True, we have seen a few Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012 banners in Mataram, but they seem to target only local tourists.”

LHA had over the past year worked closely with the National Government’s Tourism Ministry.

This year LHA had represented Lombok at 10 international travel industry events and would attend a further eight. A Lombok blog site would be created for visitors to share their experiences and images. It would be linked to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Contemporary presentation material would be developed to meet the needs of guests and potential visitors.

LHA was working with the Agriculture and Cooperative Services Department to achieve improved supply of relevant food products to hotels and restaurants. “We need better supply of quality products at more competitive costs so we can provide a really great value-for-money experience.”

Servin expressed frustration at impediments to tourism growth such as the stalled southern Mandalika project in which “almost nothing has moved in 10 years.”

He called for greater effort to secure new flights, new airlines and higher seat capacity at Lombok’s new international airport.

“We have safety and security issues with villages around the airport trying to dictate how a provincial asset and international aviation facility should be operated.

“It is strange to focus on avoiding conflict with a few hundred people around the airport when hundreds of billions have been invested and while the economic welfare of tens of thousands of people and future investment in the trillions of rupiah are at risk.”

Servin urged local authorities to have higher regard for Lombok tourism as a serious business. “Land issues must be sorted out for new projects and support for investors must be real and consistent.”

Servin said LHA was grateful for limited support from the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial administration but encouraged it “to find a way” to actively promote tourism in a contemporary style.

LHA investment in tourism promotion had created jobs for thousands and deserved full local government support. “Tourist facilities must be improved. Promotion must be serious and relevant. Industry employees must be educated.

“People with experience and knowledge should be placed in government tourism positions. This is common business sense.

“We have very serious challenges but much can be done, especially by local government, to realise tourism’s true benefits to our communities and to the economy.”

The Santosa Villas & Resort Lombok Welcomed Chappy Hakim, A Retired Marshall and Former Chief of the Indonesian Air Force.

 

Senggigi, Lombok, May 1 2012:  The Santosa Villas & Resort (TSVR) recently hosted Mr. Chappy Hakim, the Indonesian Air Force’s Chief of the Air Staff from 2002 to 2005. Mr. Hakim and his family arrived at BIL (Bandara Internasional Lombok) with a Sky Aviation Flight from Denpasar at 14.00 p.m. Saturday April 28, 2012. This was their first visit to Lombok. Upon arrival at The Santosa Villas & Resort, they were greeted by a welcoming party comprised of The Santosa General Manager, Mr. Stephane Servin, MICE Manager Mrs. Ayu Widnyani and an assortment of The Santosa’s management and staff. This was followed by a business lunch at the Seaside Restaurant the next day.

 

As an Air Chief Marshall, Mr. Hakim has received a four-star rank and a NATO ranking code of OF-9. Some of the positions he has held include the Commandant of an Air Force Base, the Operations Director of The Air Force Head Quarters, Governer of The Air Force Academy, Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Personnel Department, and General Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy. He is also an MURI (Indonesian Records Museum) award winner for publishing more than a hundred books in one year and has garnered many other awards as well.

Besides Mr. Hakim, The Santosa Villas & Resort was honored to welcome and host many other recent VIP visits, such as Mr. Toto Utomo Budi Santosa, Secretary General of the Indonesian Social Ministry on April 24-April 25, 2012 and the Director-Generals of Ministry, Labor and Transmigration from 15 different countries, including Indonesia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc., from April 29 – May 2, 2012.

The Santosa Villas & Resort Celebrates Its 4th Anniversary

The Team Building Activities by the Management & Staff of The Santosa Villas & Resort Lombok Hope to Bring Fresh Minds for Better Results.

 

Senggigi, Lombok, April 16 2012:  The Santosa Villas & Resort (TSVR) continued its 4th anniversary celebration by hosting outbound team building activities for all of its management and staff at Batu Kumbung, Lingsar. With its activities’ slogan, “Fresh Minds for Better Results”, the teambuilding activities were held on two different occasions, March 31 2012 (attended by the first group: 160 participants) and April 7 2012 (attended by the second group: 143 participants). Both were instituted to nurture and support the relationship between all of the Santosa’s employees and also to stimulate problem-solving tasks designed to help group members develop their capacity to work together effectively.

 

The outbound programs, which started at 7:00 a.m. and finished at 6:00 p.m., were organized and conducted by the Pathfinder Outbounds and TSRV committee. Activities included an ice breaking session, 9 outdoor games, a low rope course and village tours while in the field, with additional games like Cargo Net and Flying Fox. The Santosa also partnered with many of the most respected names in Lombok to provide the door prizes, such as a TV, Laptop, Cellphones, and Hotel & Flight Vouchers.

 

In the end, the activities were well appreciated by the whole Santosa Team. They not only provided an enriching experience and invaluable memories, but also effectively highlighted the participants’ individual talents and thus established that the strength of a team also lies in its differences. Staff members’ spirits sored high and everyone also shared an important bonding experience.
